Eversight Director earns highest CEBT exam score

The Eye Bank Association of America recently recognized Collin Ross, Executive Director of Eversight International, for earning the highest score on the Certified Eye Bank Technician (CEBT) exam this spring.

While CEBT certification is not required for his position, Ross felt that developing a clear understanding of clinical techniques was essential to providing a higher level of service to surgeons and their patients.

“In my role, it’s important that I have an in-depth knowledge of both clinical and administrative aspects of eye banking,” he said. “I spend much of my time developing relationships with surgeons around the world where access to safe, reliable transplant services is limited. It is my first priority that they feel confident in Eversight’s services so they can focus on the most important part of their work – their patients.”

To prepare for the exam, Ross spent months observing tissue recovery, evaluation and processing procedures alongside Eversight’s highly-skilled laboratory technicians. CEBT certification requires passing both a written and practical test. Trainees must demonstrate proficiency in a variety of topics, including anatomy of the eye, knowledge of ocular diseases, EBAA Medical Standards, technical laboratory procedures and more.

In his role as executive director of Eversight International, Ross established Eversight Korea and develops relationships with eye banking partners throughout East Asia, the Middle East and North Africa.

    Making Vision a Global Reality

Thank you to everyone who joined us at the Arab American National Museum for Eversight International’s first fundraiser, Making Vision a Global Reality, on May 14. The event brought Eversight supporters together with local community leaders to bring attention to the organization’s global work. Attendees enjoyed Arabic food and treats, toured the museum’s exhibits and heard a presentation from a donor mother, whose daughter’s corneas restored sight to two recipients in Italy.

“Our goal is to let people know about the life-changing work Eversight International is doing around the world,” said Collin Ross, Executive Director of Eversight International. &ldWe help restore sight to thousands of people across the globe each year in countries where corneas would otherwise be unavailable. At our event, we made connections with community members who are interested in our international mission, and let them know how they can help.”

  • Dr. Saif Al Schamarti; a cornea surgeon from Diwaniyah, Iraq; recently visited Eversight’s Ann Arbor headquarters for a unique wet lab with Dr. Shahzad Mian, one of Eversight’s Medical Directors. Click here to read more.

Dr. Saif is the only physician in his region who performs cornea transplants, restoring sight to his patients under very difficult conditions. Eversight has provided more than 40 PKP corneas to Dr. Saif in the past year, and he has had very good outcomes in his transplant surgeries.

Before his journey to the U.S. for ASCRS, he requested help from Eversight in finding a hands-on training opportunity for DSAEK or DMEK surgeries. When we could not find a training program that would fit his travel schedule, Eversight worked with Dr. Mian to set up a one-on-one DSAEK wet lab at the Kellogg Eye Center in Ann Arbor. Dr. Saif also had the opportunity to shadow Dr. Mian in his clinic and to observe transplant surgeries by Dr. Mian and Dr. Kaz Soong.

“We are extremely appreciative of Dr. Mian, Dr. Soong and their team at the Kellogg Eye Center for helping us provide this valuable training opportunity,” said Collin Ross, Executive Director of Eversight International. “Dr. Saif is a dedicated surgeon who wants to improve the lives of his patients despite the troubles facing Iraq. Working together with great partners like Dr. Mian, Dr. Soong and Dr. Saif, Eversight can do powerful things to help people around the world.”

    World Ophthalmology Congress

Eversight International exhibited at the World Ophthalmology Congress (WOC) of the International Council of Ophthalmology in April 2014.

Collin Ross, Executive Director of Eversight International, met with physicians from around the world at the Tokyo conference to discuss Eversight’s tissue processing services and introduce plans for a new distribution center in South Korea. This office, which will have its own laboratory, will allow us to ship tissue internationally prior to preparing it for surgeon use. This will reduce Eversight’s processing time and help provide the highest-quality tissue in the most efficient and time sensitive way possible to international recipients.

The international offices also work with local eye banks to provide technological support and other assistance. Currently, about 30 pct. of corneas provided by Eversight go to recipients outside of the U.S.

Representatives of the Middle East Africa Council of Ophthalmology (MEACO) and Middle East Africa Eye Bank Organization (MEAEBO) joined us in October 2010 to learn about developing standards and best practices for eye banking.
