Our Mission

We restore sight and prevent blindness through the healing power of donation, transplantation and research.

The Eversight Michigan Story

Eversight Michigan was founded in 1957 with a man’s dying wish: to donate his eyes so that others may see. That wish united University of Michigan ophthalmologist John W. Henderson, M.D., Ph.D., with Lions Clubs across the state to create a way for people to give the precious gift of sight – and the Michigan Eye-Bank was born.

Dr. Henderson established a reputation for clinical excellence, one that has been upheld over the years by some of the finest medical directors, staff and board members in the eye banking field. It was this sterling reputation that first inspired the Illinois Eye-Bank to seek an affiliation with the Michigan Eye-Bank in 1985 and create Midwest Eye-Banks.

Joined by the BroMenn-Watson Gailey Eye-Bank (now Eversight Illinois, Bloomington) in 1996, the Lions Eye Bank of New Jersey in 2005 and the Cleveland Eye Bank in 2012, Midwest Eye-Banks has established a growing network of community eye banks that, together, provides the resources and expertise of a global organization.

In March 2015, the organization changed its name to Eversight to inspire even more people to support its work and re-energize its mission to preserve and restore sight.

Our vision for the future is to expand our reach, connect more effectively with our communities and provide a life full of sight to anyone in need.

Eversight Michigan continues to uphold Dr. Henderson’s reputation of excellence as an accredited member of the Eye Bank Association of America (EBAA) and by meeting the quality standards set by the Food and Drug Administration.

Eversight is a charitable, not-for-profit organization. Our mission is to restore sight and prevent blindness through the healing power of donation, transplantation and research. Our network of community based eye banks – in Illinois, Michigan, New Jersey and Ohio – recovers, evaluates and provides human eye tissue for transplantation; supports research into the causes and cures of blinding eye conditions; promotes donation awareness through public and professional education; and provides humanitarian aid to people around the world in need of sight-restoring services.
