Accidental eye injury is the leading cause of visual impairment in the U.S. According to the American Academy of Ophthalmology, more than one million people suffer from eye injuries each year, and 90 percent of these injuries could have been prevented if the individual had been wearing appropriate protective eyegear. In 2013, 1,197 corneas were provided for patients in the U.S. who suffered from mechanical or chemical trauma to the eye, accounting for 1.8 percent of all transplants that year.
