Nov. 2, 2022 - Every November, we join the Eye Bank Association of America (EBAA) and other member eye banks in celebrating Eye Donation Month—an initiative to raise awareness about the life-changing impact of cornea donation and transplantation and recognize all those who have donated the gift of sight for transplantation or critically needed vision research.
EBAA eye banks, like Eversight, are nonprofit organizations that obtain, medically evaluate and distribute corneas donated by caring individuals for use in corneal transplantation, research and education.
In 2021, Eversight provided 12,036 tissues for transplantation, research and education around the world. Vanessa Rubin, a Cleveland jazz vocalist, is one such recipient who had her sight restored with two cornea transplants.
Since 1961, EBAA eye banks have collectively restored sight for more than two million individuals worldwide. But the need for donation remains as there are currently an estimated 12 million people suffering from corneal blindness around the world.
By registering your decision to be an organ, eye and tissue donor, you are helping to save lives and give hope to the more than 100,000 people in the U.S. currently waiting for lifesaving organ transplants. Thousands more are in need of life-changing tissue or corneal transplants to restore health. One donor can save and heal more than 75 lives.
This month, as part of our community, please join us in celebrating the gift of sight and encouraging others to consider registering as eye, organ and tissue donors. More information can be found on our “Join the Registry” page.
