Larry Alman was born blind due to congenital cataracts and had multiple cataract surgeries before he was five years old. Over the course of his life, Larry has had a total of ten cornea transplants to maintain some vision.
“I’ve been legally blind all my life,” Larry said. “I’ve always wanted to do better than people thought I could do. I just wanted to prove that I could do things better than they thought I could.”
Thanks to the selfless decision ten people made to become donors, Larry, at the age of 79, has been able to live a fulfilling life, giving back to and being active in his community. As the secretary of the Greenville Lions Club and member of 40 years, Larry has given over half his life to serving others and honoring those who gave him the life-changing gift of sight.
“Joining the registry is important because it helps other people survive,” he said. “I’ve been able to see better than I would have if I hadn’t gotten their corneas.”
Donation and transplantation have drastically changed Larry’s vision and his life for the better.
“It’s really important to me that if I could donate what I have to help somebody else survive, have a better way of life, I’d be glad to do that.”
