Learn about Eversight’s experience at the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery conference

Beyond the conference: Go behind the scenes at ASCRS with Eversight

April 26, 2024 – Eversight team members recently attended the 2024 American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (ASCRS) conference in Boston, Mass.

With programming in the areas of cataract, refractive, glaucoma and cornea, the ASCRS Annual Meeting is essential for anterior segment surgeons looking to maintain, refine and expand their clinical knowledge and skills.

It is also a great way for eye banks like Eversight to send team members to help educate surgeons and network with industry partners.

New beginnings, strong connections

For Partner Development Director Brooke Harthun, this was her first time attending ASCRS and it left a positive impression.

“I had several opportunities to connect with potential partners and those conversations went well,” Harthun said. “I was able to create a good foundation for future relationships and will continue to show how our awesome eye bank can support them.”

She said ASCRS was a great place to connect and learn about current events in the industry, including informative and engaging presentations.

Amongst the numerous presentations Harthun attended, she also participated in two Eversight Academy-sponsored DALK and DMEK wet labs with a few Eversight surgeons, including Drs. Craig See, Lorenzo Cervantes and Farida Hakim.

Harthun said ASCRS was a unique chance to meet new people and further her relationship with surgeons.

“We had dinner with Dr. Cervantes and Dr. Gupta which was so fun,” she said. “They are great people and having them as part of the Eversight family is so enriching. My colleague Michael Szkarlat always makes fun of me for taking pictures of my food, but Dr. Cervantes also does it, so we bonded over that!”

Seasoned professionals & networking

Seasoned ASCRS attendee and Eversight Partner Development Director Michael Szkarlat, agreed that the DALK wet lab on Friday, April 5, and the DMEK wet lab on Saturday, April 6, were very successful, with collaboration from peer eye banks.

During the conference, Szkarlat met many talented and skilled surgeons, honing their craft and looking for ways to expand their knowledge.

“I met with Dr. Kanwal Matharu from University of Iowa to discuss opportunities to collaborate with Iowa in global ophthalmology,” Szkarlat said.

Product launch & collaboration

Eversight Business Development Director Caithlin Lopes also attended the conference and was blown away by how successful she thought the weekend was.

Lopes attended multiple sessions, including:

  • An update on new therapies that included the front runner for cell therapy (Aurion and Emmecell) and artificial cornea (EndoArt)
  • A couple of sessions on reimbursement
  • A presentation on CAIRS and CTAK

She was able to network with new surgeons looking for solutions to some of their more complicated cases and any pain points they experience in the field.

Many of these conversations touched on BrightMEM, Eversight’s newest ancillary product that was launched at ASCRS.
