Grant supports three innovative studies aimed at improving corneal transplantation, finding cures for various ophthalmic diseases & enhancing eye banking technology

Louise H. and David S. Ingalls Foundation invests in critical vision research

CLEVELAND, Feb. 3, 2025 – The Louise H. and David S. Ingalls Foundation has renewed support of Eversight’s mission by awarding an $80,000 grant to support three critical research studies at the Eversight Center for Vision and Eye Banking Research in Cleveland.

The Ingalls Foundation and Eversight share a rich history and mission alignment. Foundation founder David S. Ingalls, Sr. was a true champion of eye banking, providing the vision, leadership and financial means to create the Central Eye Bank for Sight Restoration, which then became the Cleveland Eye Bank. In 2015, the Cleveland Eye Bank joined a network of eye banks across the U.S. to form one organization named Eversight.

The Louise H. and David S. Ingalls Foundation is dedicated to the improvement of the physical, educational, mental and moral condition of humanity, primarily in the Cleveland area. Their gift will allow Eversight to advance three ongoing vision and eye banking research projects. The three studies this gift supports aim to have the following impact:

  • Develop a novel corneal storage solution aimed at improving regenerative potential of various corneal cells and enhancing post-operative outcomes in the recipients.
  • Develop software that will advance corneal tissue imaging to integrate AI-based modalities to detect ocular pathologies using Optical Coherence technology (OCX).
  • Improve treatment options for Limbal Stem Cell Deficiencies (LSCD) by developing a novel corneal transplantation graft that will be used for allogenic simple limbal epithelial transplantation (Allo-SLET) to cure LSCD.

Each of these studies has the potential to impact thousands of individuals living worldwide with visual impairment.

“The generous support of the Louise H. and David S. Ingalls Foundation is instrumental in advancing innovative research that can transform lives,” said Onkar B. Sawant, PhD, Vice President of Research & Development, Eversight. “With this funding, we can drive innovative progress in vision science—developing new treatments, improving corneal transplantation and addressing critical challenges in eye care worldwide. We are deeply grateful for the Ingalls Foundation’s commitment to our mission and their belief in the power of research to help make vision a reality for those in need.”
