ANN ARBOR, Mich. — Eversight is advancing support for the elimination of corneal blindness thanks to a generous $60,000 grant by the DMC Foundation.
The two-year grant will help fund the important work of Eversight to advance the knowledge and support for corneal transplantation and eye, organ and tissue donation in Southeast Michigan, especially among under-represented populations in the region.
“The DMC Foundation is fueling a key aspect of the Eversight mission to restore sight and prevent blindness,” said Alex Teska, Director of Philanthropy at Eversight. “We are excited to engage community leaders in the area and help people overcome objections and fears related to eye, organ and tissue donation.”
Southeast Michigan contains some of the nation’s most diverse counties, with large African American, Hispanic and Arab American populations. Religious beliefs can play a major role in the decision to join the Donor Registry, but education provided by trusted cultural and religious leaders leads many people to overcome misconceptions.
Eversight, one of the world’s largest nonprofit organizations restoring sight and preventing blindness, will hold a series of symposiums and engage the community with tailored educational materials to break down the barriers to donor registration.
“The DMC Foundation is helping Eversight fill a distinct need in our region,” Teska said. “This grant allows us to reach under-represented populations and advance support for the elimination of corneal blindness.”
