Eversight Orbit: A letter that brought healing after loss

Months after her husband’s sudden death, Francesca Peppiatt received a letter that changed everything.

It revealed that Doug’s cornea donation had restored sight to two people—giving her something she hadn’t felt in months: hope.

“I just—oh my God,” Francesca said. “I had such a strong feeling that he was still here.”

That sense of hope came after unimaginable grief. Francesca will never forget the day her life changed forever.

“One minute, we were in a taxicab,” she said. “And the next…they told me he was gone.”

Her husband, Doug Tonks, was only 55 years old when he became an eye and tissue donor.

What followed was a whirlwind of shock, trauma and a grief so consuming it felt impossible to move beyond it. But amid that heartbreak, something unexpected emerged—something Francesca now describes as “a blessing in disguise.”

Because of Doug’s decision to be a donor, his story didn’t end that day.

A love story for the books

Before the chest pains, before the ambulance and dash to the hospital, before the phone calls—there was Doug, an unforgettable human being.

“He was pretty amazing. We had the typical rom-com meeting where we hated each other at the beginning,” Francesca said with a smile.

Their story started in a screenwriting class, where Doug wasn’t afraid to challenge her.

“I made a comment about someone’s script, and I heard this voice from the back of the room say, ‘I totally disagree with that.’ I thought—who is this jerk?” Francesca said.

That “jerk” quickly became the love of her life.

They built a relationship grounded in humor, shared passions and a deep appreciation for storytelling. Doug was a writer and editor, a lifelong lover of comic books, music, film and television.

At just six years old, he picked up his first comic book—sparking a passion that would stay with him forever. He became a dedicated collector, a trivia expert and even a creator of his own comics. He later authored books, wrote daily blog entries and immersed himself in creative work throughout his life.

“He was a fanatic in the best way,” Francesca recalled.

Their lives together spanned cities and decades—from Nashville to Los Angeles to Chicago—where they built a life filled with creativity, laughter, light competition and love.

“We were married for 28 years,” Francesca said. “Over half my life.”

The day everything changed

Doug had always dealt with underlying health issues, but in early 2016, something felt different.

On the day of his doctor’s appointment, Doug called Francesca from work saying he wasn’t feeling well. But once they got home, his condition quickly worsened.

“I was helping him back to bed, and he passed out right on top of me,” she said. “I was doing all the things you see on TV, ‘Come on, stay with me, it’s okay.’”

She called 911, trying to stay calm as the operator guided her. When she arrived at the hospital, those glimmers of hope had disappeared.

“They immediately took me to the Family Room,” she said. “I knew that wasn’t a good sign.”

Moments later, Doug’s doctor came in. “I told her, ‘Just tell me he’s alive,’” Francesca remembered. The doctor stared at her and all she could say was, ‘No.’

Doug had passed away from hypertensive heart failure.

A decision of donation

In the hours after Doug’s passing, Francesca received another unexpected call from Gift of Hope Organ & Tissue Donor Network, an Eversight partner.

“They told me he was an organ donor,” Francesca said. “I didn’t even know. We had never talked about it.”

Despite the shock and grief, Francesca honored his decision.

“I knew it was the right thing to do,” she said.

Doug’s family supported the decision, even finding moments of humor in an unexpected tragedy.

“They said, ‘Well, they’re certainly not going to use his eyes. He couldn’t see a damn thing,’” Francesca recalled.

In the weeks and months that followed, Francesca moved through a fog of grief.

The letter that restored more than sight

The letter from Eversight became a turning point in Francesca’s grief. It gave her  something she hadn’t felt in a while: comfort.

“It said his eyes saved two people from corneal blindness,” she said. “It makes you feel like they're still in the world. He was such an incredible, helpful, wonderful, kind person that still doing that after he passed was so rewarding to hear and it healed so much.”

Doug’s donation extended far beyond restoring sight—helping burn victims, cancer patients and others in need. In total, dozens of people benefited from his gifts.

As Francesca became more involved with the donor family community, she attended an Eversight donor appreciation breakfast.

“I met a recipient who told me they feel incredible guilt, saying, ‘Even though it saved and changed our lives; someone had to die for me to receive this gift.’ I never thought of that,” Francesca said.

She had once hoped to connect with Doug’s recipients. Now, she understands the complexity of that relationship.

“I really wanted the recipients to know how important it was for our recovery to know that he is out there and doing something, helping people and still part of the world,” she said.

Choosing to keep living with joy

After Doug’s death, every February Francesca found herself reliving his final days.

“When it would hit that day, I was destroyed by it.”

After the third year, Francesca knew something had to change.

“I can’t do this anymore,” she said. “We just have to remember the joyful moments. We can't be lost in misery. We need to relive the beautiful things that were all him.”

Today, Francesca is committed to sharing Doug’s story.

“I want people to understand what donation really means.”

She has shared her story at Eversight events and through her own published writing. For Francesca, the knowledge that Doug’s donation restored sight—and helped so many others—has brought a sense of peace she never expected.

Doug Tonks was a writer, a traveler, a music lover, a storyteller, a light in so many lives—and through his selfless decision, he is a donor hero too.
