Collaborating across borders to advance eye banking and eliminate corneal blindness

Empowering global eye banking: Eversight experts head to Indonesia

In September 2024, Eversight International Program Director David Lee and Tissue Processing Director Nicholas Hicks, participated in a transformative training session during World Eye Bank Symposium 2024 (WEBS) hosted by the Asian Eye Bank Association (AEBA) in Jakarta, Indonesia. This session marked a pivotal moment in Eversight's mission to expand eye banking knowledge and fight corneal blindness worldwide.

Training for impact

The training aimed to equip surgeons, nurses and hospital staff with foundational eye banking knowledge. Through lectures and hands-on demonstrations, David and Nick addressed topics like eye bank development, tissue recovery and slit-lamp tissue evaluation. Their efforts laid the groundwork for the launch of RSCM's first eye bank, fostering a new chapter in Indonesia's corneal blindness prevention.

A moment that stood out for David was noticing the participants’ passion to promote eye donation and eliminate corneal blindness.

“There are so many of us––eye bankers and surgeons––in the world trying to help people restore their sight,” David said. “This really empowers me to do what I do. One day, with collaborative efforts from all, I firmly believe that we will live in a world without corneal blindness.”

Nick echoed similar sentiments, reflecting on his interactions with hospital staff.

“Everyone was very kind and welcoming,” he said. “During the training everybody was interested, engaged and asked a lot of great questions to try and pick up as much information as possible. They were all excited and eager to get their eye bank up and running so they could help more people in their community.”

A global perspective on eye banking

The session was attended by 125 participants, both in person and virtually. This enthusiastic turnout demonstrated the high level of interest and commitment within the local medical community. Beyond technical knowledge, the training fostered collaboration, helping hospital staff envision the transformative impact of an operational eye bank in Jakarta.

"I came home with a renewed perspective," Nick said. "While Eversight handles a high volume of work, seeing the drive and determination in Indonesia reminded me of how fortunate we are to make a difference and underscored the need for broader global efforts."

Building a brighter future

David highlighted the importance of international education and training.

"It helps people to start thinking about why eye banks are so important and gives them a basis to start one,” he said. “Eversight can always help along the way."

David and Nick’s presentations and demonstration not only empowered those in attendance to use this gained knowledge locally but also solidified Eversight's role as a key partner in Indonesian eye banking.

“From a technical standpoint there are eye banks, technicians and surgeons that are all at different levels in their area,” Nick said. “Education and training sessions allow everyone to come together to share their knowledge, techniques and experience with others. The more we all learn the bigger impact we can have.”

Memorable firsts and lasting connections

For Nick, this trip was filled with firsts: his first time in Indonesia, leading an in-house training, attending WEBS and the Asia Cornea Society meetings, and experiencing local culture and cuisine. Both he and David expressed gratitude for the opportunity to contribute to the global fight against corneal blindness.
