Eversight has been working to restore sight and prevent blindness through the healing power of donation, transplantation and research for 75 years.
Our mission began in 1947 with the establishment of the fourth eye bank in the United States, then known as the Illinois Eye-Bank. Over time, nonprofit eye banks were established in every state—often by Lions Clubs—to meet the critical demand for corneal tissue to treat preventable blindness.
The Illinois Eye-Bank and Michigan Eye-Bank formed a partnership in 1985—one that would earn a reputation for clinical excellence made possible by some of the finest medical directors, staff and board members in the eye banking field. The success of the organization led to affiliations with other regional eye banks including the BroMenn-Watson Gailey Eye-Bank, Lions Eye Bank of New Jersey, Cleveland Eye Bank and the Connecticut Eye Bank, forming one of the largest networks of eye banks in the world.
In 2015, the network became known as Eversight—a unified operation delivering the highest quality services to surgeons and researchers. Today, 75 years later, Eversight has a global reach and continues to transform lives worldwide.
Eversight services reach far beyond traditional eye banking. In addition to recovering, evaluating and providing human eye tissue for transplantation, Eversight also:
- Supports academic research into the causes and cures of blinding eye conditions
- Conducts eye banking research to provide innovative solutions for surgeons and their patients
- Promotes donation awareness through public and professional education
- Provides humanitarian aid to people around the world in need of sight restoring transplants
- Partners with local governments and medical professionals in countries seeking to establish independent, sustainable eye banking infrastructure
- Educates technicians, surgeons and other clinicians on the latest eye banking and transplant techniques
Eversight has had the privilege of helping keep hope in sight for 75 years and counting. You can contribute to our work making vision a reality for more than 9,000 people every year. Your support for our critical mission changes lives.
