Eversight, Korean Lions establish partnership to improve local vision care

Eversight, a leading global nonprofit eye bank dedicated to restoring sight and preventing blindness, and the Korean Federation of International Lions Associations signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to improve human welfare and develop capacity in local communities to improve access to lifechanging cornea transplants.

“We are honored to partner with the Lions of Korea on this initiative that is directly aligned with our goal to improve vision health around the world,” said Collin Ross, Vice President of Partner Relations & Global Development, Eversight. “Through this partnership, we are not just restoring sight but also building brighter futures for local Korean communities.”

Lions of Korea MOU with Eversight
This spring, Eversight President/CEO Diane Hollingsworth and Vice President of Partner Relations and Global Development Collin Ross hosted a delegation from the Lions Clubs in Korea at Eversight’s Illinois location. The South Korean delegation included every District Governor from across the country.
Hollingsworth and Lion Dr. JaeHong Kim gave opening remarks, and Hollingsworth presented the honorable guests with the Doc Barr Knights of the Blind crystal award symbolizing the importance of Eversight’s work with the Lions of Korea. In turn, Eversight was given a Lions award to commemorate the visit and its importance from the Korean Lions.

The group received a comprehensive facility tour, which included observing DSAEK tissue preparation. Discussions were held regarding continued collaboration on eye bank development projects in the region, as well as Eversight’s ability to provide charitable tissue for patients in need.
International Program Director David Dongwoo Lee and the entire Eversight Global Development team look forward to further development of a mutually beneficial partnership.

Proven commitment in Asia

This year, Eversight also became a council member of the Association of Eye Banks of Asia (AEBA), which consists of 10 countries. AEBA was formed by the Asia Cornea Society in January 2009 as a supranational networking organization to bring eye banks in the region together.

Eversight’s participation will involve creating programs for biennial AEBA meetings, promoting eye tissue donation, training technicians, developing medical standards, supporting Asian eye banks and more.

Globally, an estimated 2.2 billion people are impacted by blindness and visual impairment. Approximately one billion of these individuals are coping with blindness or visual impairment that can be characterized as preventable or not sufficiently addressed. This includes 12 million people who suffer from corneal blindness, making it the fourth leading cause of blindness globally.

Eversight is working to address this global burden and help make vision a reality for more people worldwide. For more information about Eversight’s global vision, visit eversightvision.org/global.
